Hemlandet det gamla och det nya Galesburg, Ill. Gamla och nya hemlandet Chicago, Ill. Hemlandet the Homelandalso variously titled Hemlandet det gamla och det nya the Homeland the Old and the New and Gamla och nya hemlandet the Old and New Homelandwas the first successful Swedish language newspaper published in the United States. It was founded by Augustana Lutheran minister Tuve Hasselquist, who acted as publisher and editor, and was intended to serve as the church's voice to the Swedish Lutheran community in the United States.
The biweekly four page 10"x14" sheet printed its first issue on January 3, in Galesburg, Illinois, and was initially limited to church news and devotional articles.
The company moved Hemlandet to Chicago at the start ofas better fitted a paper of national ambitions, and also purchased and absorbed rival paper Minnesota posten. Hemlandet was increased to eight pages and began publishing weekly; it soon was expanded again to 16 pages. Eric Norelius briefly served as editor, followed by Jonas Engberg, A. Cervin, J. Princell, P. Sundelius, and in Johan A. Enander, Flykten Till Egypten - No Artist - Bibellandet - Nya Testamentet För Barn Med Sture Ström whose leadership the paper flourished.
Hemlandet was one of the most influential and widely read Swedish language papers in the United States through the late nineteenth century, even as it engaged in feisty public competition with new secular and liberal Swedish language rivals in Chicago, notably Svenska amerikanaren and Svenska tribunen. This competition led Choquemos - Dios - Dios to move to mainly secular content, though the paper's slant remained conservative and in line with the views of the Augustana Synod.
Topics covered included news from Sweden and editorial comments on developments there, politics, general news, economics, and reader letters from Swedish settlements in the Midwest. The variant title Gamla och nya hemlandet began to be used more consistently as ofthough the title continued to occasionally be shortened to Hemlandet. The paper's office and print shop, located on North Clark Street in Chicago, was destroyed along with all stock and equipment in the Chicago fire of A new office was set up in a rented basement on Milwaukee Avenue and later moved to accommodations at 94 E.
