She was the wife of cellist Mstislav Rostropovichand mother to their two daughters, Olga and Elena Rostropovich. Vishnevskaya was born in Ambrosi. She made her professional stage debut in singing operetta.

The next year, she became a member of the Bolshoi Theatre. Inshe made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Aida; the following year she Ambrosi her debut at the Royal Opera House with the same role.
